Umbrella Gallery Vasilis Asimakopoulos Solo Show in Leeds

UMBRELLA gallery will host an exhibition of work by London based artist Vasilis Asimakopoulos, who currently undertakes his final year at the Royal College of Art. Curated by artist Simeon Barclay, Sorbic Acid will see the return of Asimakopoulos, who began his formative studies in the city, at the Leeds College of Art.
Vasilis Asimakopoulos explains the concept of his latest work which is going to be exhibited at the gallery:
“Sorbic Acid is used as a key ingredient in the popular American candy bar Twinkies to re-tain, as the packet indicates,freshness. According to urban myth and Family Guy, Twinkies along with cockroaches are likely to survive a nuclear blast.
In essence, Sorbic Acid best describes the condition of our plastic world today and the ironic hope or prediction that after an inevitable global catastrophe life will continue pleasantly. If not as we knew it, at least naturally with a twisted smile stretching from the artificial preservatives that run through the veins of our future earth. This hope is reflected in the work as projections of the future while reflecting society and life as a whole today. Materials such as polyurethane foam, tooth paste and resin emphasize the synthetic ingredients of the work, while at the same time anchor its reading as suggestive sculptural objects.”

I know it has been a while... and I am sorry that I haven't posted anything in this blog for ages! Life is really busy at the moment and loads o things have been going on!

Essays, deadlines, presentation etc. So bare with me!

Just to update you a bit:

The good news is that a big news portal : theinsider.gr has asked me to write stories that are going to be published online. This is great news as reporting for things that interest me is like a passion to me! Thus, i am extremely happy!

4. I visited Vasilis Asimakopoulos studio at Howie Street and saw there one of his new sculptures:

The scull that Vasilis made is still in progress and is covered with toothpaste so once you get close to the skull you can actually smell the mint that comes from the toothpaste. The skull is placed on a destroyed fridge and some pieces of wood painted in gloss paint extend from the fridge! Just stunning!

A Sunday walk in London is one of the most pleasant experiences for me!

A walk in Brick Lane on a Sunday morning was once again a revelation! Brick Lane is like the heart that beats strong in London's East End and fuels you with ideas, images, colors, faces, sounds, smells and tastes!

A walk in the narrow streets of Brick Lane is great fun! People are selling diverse things on their self-made stands.... From food (Moroccan, Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Fish and Chips, Turkish and so on) to clothes, art prints and rare stuff in the same market.

With my friends we came across the Brick Lane Gallery which was presenting the show Art in Mind & Arts and Mines!! And it was just amazing! Seven talented UK and international artists were showing their works!

Let's have a look:

The fuel pump guns were made by Glenn Fitzpatrick and were my favorite ones! I just loved them! This installation was so powerful to me! The polemic of war was the theme of the installation in the context of the British foreign policy in the Middle East. Once again oil was ultimate subject, and the fuel pump gun was used symbolically by the artist to show the role of iconic guns which in this case was the fuel pump gun! Very nice work indeed!

10 Young Artists meet @ An Unusual Gallery

Il alla à lai del'ail, and I am sure this 'expression' does not make any sense to you! Neither did it to me! But that was the exact point when the curator and artist Robin Kirsten selected this title for the group show of the ten young artists (Luke Dowd, Vicky Wright, Conrad Ventur, Robin Kirsten Neil Hedger, Gorka Mohamed, Bradford Bailey, Justin Eagle, Ben Newton, Matt Golden). The title of the exhibition was not there to mean anything in particular. It was simply given because of the nature of the works that were hosted at the venue of Crimes Town Gallery. What I mean by that is that the works of art were very different and were not really related to one another. And the only common thing that they all shared, was the fact that they didn't really fit together. Interestingly enough, they did fit together according to Robin Kirsten.

What is exciting about this show is that it is interestingly new, amazingly fresh and extremely prominent for London's art scene. I don't mean to be over-simplistic but these were the three words (new, fresh, prominent) which crossed my mind when I went at the private view of the show last week.

The second thing that crossed my mind was again that sense of underground art that you can purely taste @ London's East End. This was also reinforced by the fact that the gallery's name Crimes Town was given because of some graffiti on its door where a man passed away just outside the venue's main door.

The previous week was for me one of the most stressful weeks of the year! As a reward to myself I decided to go for a few drinks at Cargo club/open-space gallery which is located in London's East End!

It was the perfect chance to combine a night out and at the same time see the new installation that my friend Vasilis Asimakopoulos prepared @ Cargo.

The concept of his installation is the following: Animals that evolve and gradually modify themselves accordingly in order to adjust to a manmade environment. All of them end up with a head that has been exploded. Here again, Vasilis uses the environmental concept which characterizes his work and expose the impact of human involvement in the animals' habitats.

One of my recent activities includes that of working for an art magazine called: Art in London. From times to times I work as a reporter and produce features about cultural events that happen in London.

My editor asked me to produce a feature about the Henry Moore exhibition at Tate Britain this spring! I think it would be nice for you to read this feature....

The most important gathering of Henry Moore’s work will go on show this season at Tate Britain celebrating one of the greatest sculptors of all time, Stefania Vourazeri gets a sneak preview

Are you interested in exploring other aspects of Moore’s work? Do you think you want to know more about his tough, uneasy and dark forms? Then you should definitely visit Tate Britain’s Henry Moore exhibition that will display over 150 stone sculptures, wood carvings, bronzes and drawings. It is a real chance for anyone interested in Moore to inquire into his ‘real’ practices and magnitude. At the same time, the show will be illuminating even to those who are skeptical about Moore’s artwork. As Chris Stephens, Head of Displays at Tate Britain, and one of the curators of Henry Moore show explains: “Moore exercised a massive influence on artists who even if they rejected him and his work had to rebel directly against it.” And he adds, “Many younger artists today continue to reference Moore,” underlining the achievements of his work ever than before and establishing Moore as one of the most intriguing figures of world sculpture. The show will present in a clear way Moore’s talent “to make stone and wood seem to live and move”, Stephens explains.

Stephens outlines the reasons why this exhibition is launched now along with what Tate wishes to achieve. “We believe the time is right to propose another side of Moore to the popular and familiar large bronzes out of doors,” Stephens says. And he adds: “Our aim is to show him as one of the key articulators of the conditions and concerns of the troubled mid-twentieth century and to reclaim his place along Picasso, Eliot and so on.” The show is unique since none of Moore’s sculptures will be exhibited in a natural surrounding, in the daylight, or in a public space as they were usually shown. Nature this time will not embrace Moore’s art. Tate instead will present the works of art with richly coloured galleries and dramatic lighting displacing the usual presentation of Moore’s work.

Henry Moore will be the most complete and accurate presentation of Moore’s work and development. Constant themes of his work will be presented in such a manner so “the show will be a revelation both to those who know his work and those who do not,” Chris Stephens says. It will look at themes that were inseparable parts of Moore’s work and practices such as humanism, the political tension, the anxiety of the Spanish Civil War and the approach and aftermath of the Second World War. “It will also include abstract sculptures of the 1930s, threatening and sexualized works that suggest the influence of Freud and psychoanalytical theories, ” Stephens adds.
A series of Drawings of Londoners sheltering in the London Underground from the Blitz as well as the famous reclining figures carved in Elm wood will be the highlights of the show. “These beautiful, heavily grained works show the development of the reclining figure over the course of Moore’s career,” Stephens explains. He also underlines the importance of the Wartime drawings, when Moore was an Official War Artist. He says: “The drawings transformed Moore’s reputation, not only documenting, but also helping to built, the popular perception of the Blitz.” The war drawings were those, which continued Moore’s concern with uneasy, troubling forms and claustrophobic spaces.

The exhibition also coincides with the recent appointment of Penelope Curtis as the new director of Tate Britain, who was a former curator of the Henry Moore Institute. The show has been planned for some years so predates by along way Penelope Curtis appointment. Henry Moore will go on show from 24 February until 8 August 2010.

Hello people and happy new year!!!

I know.... it has been a while since I last posted something.... It was that Xmas spirit that kept me busy all the time!

I prepared an article for you! It's called A day in Athens! Athens is my hometown and I spent the past 13 days there while being on holidays!

I thought it might be interesting for some of you wishing or not to visit Athens at some point to know a few things about the life in the capital!

So the following post is dedicated to Athens, an unusual, vibrant city... It will give you enough information and will fill your whole day!

Α day in Athens

Chic or alternative, sophisticated or a wanderer? Athens is the city that merges everything. A day out in central Athens is enough for someone to experience the vibrant colors of the city, the busy atmosphere of the capital, the warm character of the southern eastern Europeans without necessarily having to spend a fortune. The itinerary is simple, the ambience is scandalous and fun so just enjoy the sun and get ‘lost’ in the crowd, Stefania Vourazeri reports.

Trés chic (60-100£)

People who love a cosmopolitan touch of life don’t need to splash out on money in order to enjoy their fashionable habits. You can start your day with a relaxing coffee in one of the city cafés down town. But don’t rush! Take your time! People in Athens can drink their coffee for hours. It’s like a ritual for them, a special moment in their daily lives.

Let’s start with a walk in the Kolonaki district, which is near the Lycabetus hill. It’s one of the most fashionable, rich and trendy areas in central Athens. It’s an area that Greek high society chooses for the daily shopping, the fine food, the cozy atmosphere and most of all the classy boutiques and clubs. But don’t be scared. Kolonaki is affordable if you know where to go.

Da Capo Café has one of the best cappuccino in town, its’ the most prestigious café in Kolonaki. If you wish to see and be seen Da Capo is the place to head since it’s located in one of the busiest streets in down town Athens. Young crowds, shopping and coffee addicts usually gather at Da Capo for a long chat or for a quick break before continuing with their shopping.

If you feel dizzy from the crowdie Da Capo, the best place to go for a fashionable late lunch is at Kafenio restaurant. Few tourists know Kafenio since it’s located in a quiet street in Kolonaki called Loukianou. Do ask a local but it’s not difficult to find. Kafenio offers a great variety of Greek dishes at affordable prices. Kefenio is most famously known for the homemade recipes and the large quantities of the dishes, which are simple and well presented. For a better selection of food guests can always ask the owner for suggestions depending on their taste preferences.

The night is coming soon and the cosmopolitan vibe of Kolonaki urges everyone to celebrate till the early morning hours. Most of the clubs in the area have a dressing code that is smart casual so put on your best clothes and go wild. Places at Kolonaki are fairly expensive but most of the clubs offer a free drink once paying to enter the club. Doors club is the place that attracts young Athenians who love pop, R&B and disco music and none leaves the club before five o’clock in the morning. If you are more of a bar type person then you should definitely head towards Charitos steer which in one of the liveliest and busiest streets in town. There are all sorts of bars there but you should not miss Poco’s bar cocktails.

The alternative minded (35-70£)

Just like other major Mediterranean cities such as Barcelona, Lisbon or even Rome, so does Athens thrive on a varied and refreshing alternative lifestyle community. The first stop at the heart of the capital is in the area that put Athens on the map again during the latest Greek riots. Exarcheia is a well-known area which although stigmatized lately as an infamous local it is mostly renowned for its selfstyled West meets East type of bohemian atmosphere. A morning coffee at one of the dozens of cramped little bistros and cafes on Mesologiou street is a must. Strong opinionated youth that buzz around the city meet here to talk about politics, outsider art and cultural issues while in the background lies a heap of flowers at the site where Alexis Grigoropoulos was shot dead. A reminder that this is not your typical European city.

Still roaming in the Exarcheia district one can grab a bite while tasting traditionally cooked dishes such as mezedes ( Greek style tapas ) at Rozalia. This famous meeting point for artists, politicians and city dwellers alike won’t cost you an arm and a leg and you can enjoy food that every Greek mom makes at home. Try the keftedakia (meatballs), tyrokayteri (spicy cheese dip) and xorta (yes its boiled weeds!). The house wine is also a pleasant addition when with company.

When your full try and walk off those calories on footboy heading down to the Monastiraki/ Thiseio/ Psyri area. These three areas are small and clash together to deliver a rich mix of bars and clubs but more importantly art galleries. Some more renowned ones are Irakleidon, Els Hanappe and A.D. gallery but the ones that really show that post modern culture thrives in this city, even though under the radar, is The Breeder and Kappatou galleries. Moreover, it is impossible to notice that Athens is a city literally covered in graffiti art and these areas are shinning examples of how street art and the local appreciation marry with work by both Greek and foreign inkers marking and enriching a once dead beat cement urban landscape.

After a taste of Greek punk art it is only logical to taste one of the best mojitos in town at K 44. Located in the Gazi district, this bar/gallery run space is just an example of a maze of bars and clubs that infest an area which a couple of years ago was considered slum town and boomed due to an active community of artists and clubbers. Sounds familiar? Well with one of the most famous bars called Hoxton the guessing game is over. Although bar hoping is pretty much instinctive in Gazi try to check out the 45 Degrees bar, Lierman and Gazaki all famous and all jam packed with wicked fun till 6 in the morning during weekends.

Tips for an Unusual Town:

Use the metro wherever you can it is dirt cheap and very spacious and clean!

Taxis are not expensive but as you are a tourist ask them once you are in the price. Although it depends on how far you are going you would never pay more than 10 Euros for a big distance in the center. Most of the taxi drivers speak basic English but don’t expect them to know every single road in the city. Taxis in Athens are not of the high London standards but be patient with them since many times they are chattier than needed

Tate Modern and Pop life go together

It was almost a week ago and one of my class at King's was canceled since my Professor had to fly to Lebanon. I had a six hour break before going to an event where we were about to discuss the 1948 Arab- Israeli war or the War of Independence as it is most commonly known.

Having six hours ahead of me and after so many historical discussion I needed a break so I decided to do something that is going to make my day. And that was nothing less than the exhibition Pop Life, Art in a Material World, at Tate Modern in London.

It came as an instant thought and made me realize how excited I was, when I clearly understood that this was my only chance to see an exhibition of twenty-three prominent artists of the contemporary art scene.

I no longer delayed.... I was heading towards the tube station since something big was about to happen.... That was Pop Life!!!

The exhibition was co-curated by Jack Bankowsky, Artforum’s Editor at Large, Alison M. Gingeras, Chief Curator of the François Pinault Collection and Catherine Wood, Tate Modern Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance.

Certainly the curators did a great job. Even if someone was not familiar with the work of the artists he/she was able to fully explore the magnitude of their practices.

The most important success of the exhibition was that the theme of it was clear. Art actively participates in everyday life. Art is part of a material world. Art uses and exposes our material world, thrives within it, it gives to our 'world' logic and substance. Artists' means in Pop Life were the commercial dealings and above all publicity.

I urge everyone in London to go and visit Tate Modern. The exhibition will go on show until mid January next year. Open your heart and you mind and get what you want to get from this fantastic show!

Underground Art is Fun!

Hanging out in Old Street .... or Shoreditch or East End you name it is always fun since you come across things that are unusual and can make your night out even greater....

That happened last week.... Walking on a high street, on a night out I realized an event was taking place at Shoreditch's Town Hall so I decided to have a look... It was atmospheric, dark, fresh, vivid and gave me that sense (you know)... of London's Underground art scene!

The venue was huge and the event was organized on a basement and Black America, a music band, (If I understood well), was the host of this event. Various artists exhibited their works.... performed and declared in a unique way their ideas! The Black America people were dressed in suits and were wearing make up that made them distinct from the guests.

It was truly a surprise to be there!

Private View RBS Bursary Awards 2009

What a fantastic show! Young artists, eager to make art....How wonderful is that? These are the sculpture lovers who made such a great impact at London's South Kensington last week!

I was there to support my friend Vasilis Asimakopoulos at his debut at London's art scene!

I was happy and at the same time proud of him and the rest nice artists who exhibited their works of art!
Do you remember when I firstly introduced to you Vasilis Asimakopoulos? I told you, on one of my older posts about his work and his deer.... This time I had the chance to see the final edition of Vasilis' Deer....
A few words about Vasilis Asimakopoulos art concept:
His work is concerned with the environmental impact of humankind on the natural habitats of other species. These actions have forced animals to adapt to our artificial man-made environments. Rather than viewing this in purely negative terms Vasilis is interested in the potential of these adaptation. Shedding a camouflaged coat for a high-visibilty one, 'Untitled' is a creature that has evolved its capacity to survive anarchic cultural environments as exemplified by Greek riots of 2008.

Gentlemen of Bacongo in London!

London is full of surprises, is 'the' European city and at the same time is the house of culture and art... Photography of Daniele Tamagni this time brightened up London's East End! I went to yesterdays private view at Londonewcastle Project Space and enjoyed a fascinating exhibition that will be discussed!

The theme of the exhibition focuses on the phenomenon of sapeurs, a group of people in the Republic of Congo who would rather not eat but get dressed in a fabulous way. At the exhibition there was a big quote written on the wall which summarizes the whole concept. That was saying: ''A Congolese sapeur is a happy man even if he does nor eat, because wearing proper clothes feeds the soul and gives pleasure to the body''.

To all RCA Secret Gladiators...

To obtain a Postcard-sized work of art from RCA Secret I queued for more than five hours!

It was a thrilling adventure indeed.... and I am extremely happy since I managed to get two postcard-sized works of art from Hugh Fleetwood and Andrew Fionda! The competition was great! It was actually more than great and people were camping for days before even the event was launched in order to safeguard a good place in the queue.
I tried my best to safeguard a good place in the queue... and wasn't that bad in the end!

The event only started at 8 o'clock this morning and I got there at 6 in the morning! I only managed to get inside at noon and even if most of the famous artists cards were already gone, I got two just by having a final quick glimpse since those that I had in my list were sold!

I enjoyed this fabulous art experience and I have some pictures for you to enjoy!

Well done to all of those 'Gladiators' that got their favorite ones .... RCA Rocks!

RCA Secret 2009

It's not a secret anymore...

More than 2,000 original post-card sized works of art are exhibited and go on sale in the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London this November. The post-card sized works of art have been made by famous artists along with RCA postgraduate students. They are all put together and buyers do not know the author of each work until after purchase. This is why the event is top secret and raises the adrenaline of the art lovers who can purchase original works of art from famous artists like Gerhard Richter, Bill Viola, Julian Opie , Grayson Perry and from emerging RCA artists at affordable prices. Each person can only buy up to four post-cards. I managed to get a few mobile pictures from the private view of this event where only artists and RCA students were invited so they could meet and chat with each other. Don't ask me how ...

Andy Warhol said: 'Why do people think artists are special? It's just another job.' I would probably have agreed with Andy Warhol some time ago but when I met Vasilis Asimakopoulos I changed my mind!

Working in the art business is probably the most exciting job you can do and I really admire people who have the talent to become successful and pursuit a career in the Arts field. Vasilis Asimakopoulos is one of them! He started as an undergraduate fine art student at Middlesex University in London and now is a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the department of sculpture. I was privileged enough to see him working in his studio back in Athens on a new painting! Being at the studio for hours I saw how he worked, how he crafted things and how focused he was on his work which is very promising!

These pictures are not the final version of the painting he was working on. Unfortunately I couldn't see the final version of the painting since I had to go to London...

Hopefully I will get some new pictures to show you how the final version looks like!

Vasilis will exhibit the following week at Royal British Society of Sculptor (RBS) with nine others at the RBS Bursary Awards 2009. His sculpture is a deer. Named 'Christmas in Athens'

François Pinault's Collection in Venice

François Pinault is a man committed to contemporary culture and owns the newly renovated spaces of Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in the city of Venice. As I said in my previous post, almost two weeks ago I flew to Venice for a short city break. I was privileged enough to visit these two wonderful spaces and enjoy some of the most valuable art pieces in the world, which happen to be part of François Pinault's private collection.

Names such as Jeff Koons, Sigmar Polke, Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Cy Twombly, Takashi Murakami and Jake & Dinos Chapman – are shown alongside works by emerging talents such as Matthew Day Jackson, Adel Abdessemed, Wilhelm Sasnal, Rob Pruitt, Richard Hughes, Nate Lowman, Mark Bradford and Kai Althoff.

Mapping the Studio was a true experience. These new spaces are hosting the works of art in such a delicate way that visitors can truly experience a high quality 'presentation' of the art works which is a cultural miracle in my opinion.

La Biennale di Venezia is a whole new world

In the city of wonder

What can be said about Venice? It is the mecca of Europe!

And what can be said about La Biennale di Venezia? It is without a doubt the most famous Biennale of the World!

But is this the real story? of course NOT!

Venice is more than just the Mecca of Europe and La Biennale di Venezia is more than just another contemporary art event in Europe. Venice warmly embraced the 53rd International Art Exhibition, Making Worlds and at the same time became the centre of attention in a broader sense for the Contemporary art scenery. People around the world traveled to Venice (the capital of the arts) to participate actively in an never ending story of loving art! So did I.

Last weekend I flew to Venice to enjoy with my very eyes an amazing event, a celebration! But the right thing to say is that Venice and the Biennale of Venice were truly an unforgettable experience!

What I enjoyed most, was that the whole city was living for this major event! Every single Pavilion had something to say. Every single country, part of the International Art Exhibition was expressing it self in a unique way! Pavilions were full of words! Biennale was actually Making Worlds!

One of the most interesting Pavilions was that of America with its well acclaimed artists Bruce Nauman as its representative. Pavilions such as the Russian and the Australian one were momentous.

Giardini, the park land, where La Biennale di Venezia was mainly hosted became the 'house' of the event. Visitors visiting Giardini where able to enjoy at the same time historic city of Venice and wonder around the park that Napoleon Bonaparte created.

Making Worlds most certainly had an impact on Venice and showed the world the universality of the Arts.

London Frieze 2009

One of the most amazing Events in Europe took place this weekend in London. The Art world celebrated vigorously one of the most MUST see events in the world.

Galleries from all over the world gathered in order to exhibit some of the most precious, expensive and impressive works of art!

The event was full of glamour, colors, shapes, style and culture! London Frieze once again made known to the public that Recession 'cannot' {freeze} artists imagination. The event was epic and the works of art can loudly speak for themselves!
